Hotels In Little India

Singapore’s Little India is small – basically one street – but it is a blast. Crazy-coloured shop houses compete for your attention while energetic Indian music provides an ever-changing soundtrack as you stroll down Serangoon Road, and you aren’t going to be able to resist the hypnotising scents of Indian food coming from this neighbourhood’s numerous restaurants. Little India’s fantastic energy is taken to new levels if you visit during festivals such as Thaipusam and Deepavali, or even on any normal Sunday when the streets become crowded with people enjoying their day off and the air is alive with weekend buzz. The best part is that these quirky streets are just north of downtown Singapore, so choose one of our Little India hotels today and have one of the most extraordinary city breaks you’ve ever been on.

Shopping in Little India is a special experience as well. If you are ready for some fun and an attack on all your senses, Tekka Market is just a short walk from Little India Station of the Singapore MRT. The sights and aromas of colourful flowers and spices, the thrum of a thousand bargaining voices and the chance to sit down for some cheap and tantalizing Malay, Chinese and Indian food are all things you cannot miss. The retail fun continues at Mustafa Centre, which many claim to have the best prices in all of Singapore on everything from Rolex watches to plane tickets. It is also open 24 hours a day – try not to get addicted!

Little India’s best cultural attraction is the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, a Hindu sanctuary that some like to call the best temple in Singapore. You can spend hours studying the shrines, statues and ornaments here, from the small statues that cover its pagoda, to the fierce depictions of Kali, goddess of empowerment, inside. The best part about this temple is its atmosphere during prayer times on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Not only will you see revelers going about their traditions, but friendly locals will be more than happy to explain any part of the temple you are interested in.

Little India really comes into its own during its festival celebrations. The neon lights and open-air markets during Deepavali, a Hindu occasion celebrating victory of light over darkness, is one of the best tastes of India you will get outside of the country. During a full moon in either January or February, you can test your stomach at the Thaipusam Festival when men attach shrines to themselves by piercing their skin with hooks before setting out on a day-long march through town – no one can call your holiday photos boring after that!

The best way to see for yourself why this is the most happening neighbourhood in Singapore is to check out our Little India accommodation selection and follow it up with one of our flights to Singapore.
