Frequently Asked Questions about New York City

Where are the best places to get an overview of the city?

For a 360-degree view of the city, you can't go past the Empire State Building. Rising 86 stories into the air, you'll feel on top of the world as you get your bearings and take in the pulsating streets below. Trust us, it's worth braving the crowds for the vantage point! Brooklyn Bridge is another great place to take in the skyline. Take your time meandering along its 1.7-kilometre span, enjoying fabulous views of Brooklyn, Manhattan and the nearby harbour. It's also a great place to watch a sunset or sunrise.

I don't have much time....which museums and art galleries should I prioritise?

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (you might know it as The Met) is far and away the city's most popular museum. Not only that, it's also the second-most visited art gallery in the world. Boasting works from across the globe, its sprawling collection will take you on a journey from Ancient Greece all the way up to the present day. It contains a large collection of modern art, but you'd be better off heading to MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) if that's your primary focus. MoMA has an incredible collection, including Picasso, Pollock, Van Gogh, Cézanne - the list goes on. The American Museum of Natural History is another that deserves to be on your list. With a range of interactive exhibits, this giant collection of bones, fossils, cultural artefacts (and much, much more) is a great way for the whole family to learn about the past.

Where can I catch a game of baseball?

Catching a Yankees game at Yankee Stadium is a quintessential New York experience. Baseball is considered by many to be America's national sport, and there aren't many that follow it more closely than New Yorkers. That being the case, getting tickets to a home game can be tricky, and expensive. If you do plan to join the cheering fans, be sure to book well in advance. This will get you the best deal and make sure you don't have to pull out a pair of binoculars to see the game. If you can't find suitable seats, you can be sure the game will be playing in most bars. Pull up a stool and enjoy the electric atmosphere with locals.

What's the best way to experience the Statue of Liberty?

This iconic attraction can be seen from many locations in New York City, however, you'll need to catch the ferry to Liberty Island if you want to get up close and personal with Lady Liberty. Ferries leave throughout the day from Battery Park, but we'd recommend making an early start to beat the queues and get the most out of your trip. It's worth doing some research into ticketing, as there are a few different options. Which one you buy will determine your level of access at the site. The most deluxe option is "the crown ticket". This is the one that lets you climb the inner spiral staircase right up to the top. Note: These tickets are highly sought after. If you'd like to go with this option, you'll need to purchase your ticket months in advance. Watching the pennies? Catch the free Staten Island Ferry and you'll have a good view of the statue, and the NYC skyline, from the water...without paying a dime.
