In 1796, a search party discovered Tuggerah Lake while looking for escaped convict Mary Morgan. The town has been a tourist destination since 1885, when Mr. And Mrs. Walter Denniss opened Dunleith Guest House.
Swim between the flags on a patrolled beach, where the sun’s rays touch the golden sand. Head to Memorial Park on the foreshore to take the kids to Vera’s Water Garden, and test out your skill on the giant chessboard. Fishing is popular both on the beach and in Tuggerah Lake, where you can also water-ski, sail or canoe. And if you’re heading to the lake, there are three long jetties stretching out across the shallow waters, all of which are perfect for fishing and watching the sun go down.
Pelican fans, you’re in luck. The Entrance is Australia’s pelican capital, and every day at 3.30 in the afternoon, you can watch volunteers toss fish into a crowd of hungry water birds.
Wyrrabalong National Park is only an eight-minute drive away, so get on the Central Coast Highway and explore sandy beaches, red gum rainforests and sweeping clifftop beach views.
Every year in July, music lovers can come to The Entrance for the Winter Blues and Jazz Festival, where live jazz, blues, stalls and fun park rides take over Memorial Park.
