"Modern & close to the beach"
Spent a weekend here with my partner and 16 month old. Thought it would be handy being so close to the beach & liked the idea of being close to Auckland but not in it. Greeted by lovely relief managers with a herbal tea on arrival. A great place to stay!

"Modern apartments in peaceful surroundings"
As I was running in the Auckland Marathon I chose to stay at Quest Albany because it is within walking distance of the Albany Bus Station, the northern most pick up point for buses heading to the Devonport start line. When you have to get up at 3am in the morning, quiet surroundings are really important so you can get a good nights sleep. I was pleasantly surprised at how quiet it was at Quest Albany even when we had the window open for fresh air during the night. I had the best night's sleep I've ever had before a marathon! Everything we needed was either in the apartment or in the village. We would definitely stay there again. Thank you Quest Albany.

"Great location in quiet area opposite Auckland CBD"
We appreciated the room size and amenities in a single bedroom apartment. The location on the edge of the harbor opposite to the Auckland CBD was nice and quiet and easy access to the amenities at nearby Devonport. Closeness to the ferry service across to Auckland was another advantage.

Poenamo Hotel - Northcote Hotels

Poenamo Hotel

31 Northcote Road, Northcote - Map
"Pleasant central Northshore motel"
The interior is modern, but lacked some cleanliness - there was a distinct smell coming from the bathroom/toilet (cleaning/drain?). Otherwise the place is a comfortable set up for a short term stay - we stayed for one night. The kitchen is well equipped, the TV is large and the kingsize bed was very comfortable - although it was missing a proper duvet (no additional blankets in the cupboard either). WIFI worked well ... and staff was helpful when asked re setting it up. The unit had plenty of space - but we were in a wheel chair friendly unit. Outside we noticed that there was an extensive playground for the kiddies and a well sized pool, as well as an easy access SPA pool. It was also helpful to have various restaurants close by to chose from for dinner.

Castle Spencer on Byron Hotel - Takapuna Hotels

Castle Spencer on Byron Hotel

9-17 Byron Avenue, Takapuna - Map
"A good choice for Takapuna"
We stay here often because the rooms are large and facilities excellent. Parking used to be free, but is now $10 per night, which we were happy to pay. One surprise this time was no bath - something I like when on holiday - and will choose one hotel over another for. Only small criticism would be the deck needed a clean for mildrew etc, and the neighbour had put food waste out on their deck in plastic bags ??? The view was great, except for the rubbish visible on the next door deck.

One of Auckland North’s must-visit suburbs is Devonport, a seaside village with amazing views of both the Auckland CBD and the Rangitoto Island volcano. Pick up some boutique clothing or jewellery from one of the shops housed in heritage-listed buildings. Drop into a restaurant or cafe for lunch with harbour views or take a journey back through history at the Devonport Museum or the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum, which is in an old submarine mining station.

Ready to hit the beach? You’re in the right place, with 20 beaches to pick from including Cheltenham Beach, a long stretch of sand with lovely grassy picnic areas. For a brilliant view, take a walk to the top of North Head Historic Reserve that takes you past tunnels and guns from New Zealand’s military past.

The North Shore is bursting with art and culture, and suburbs from Devonport to Takapuna have galleries worth dropping into. You might even be able to visit a local painter or potter’s private studio. The Pumphouse in Takapuna is an old water pumping station given new life as a community theatre, and you can catch everything from drama to dance and children’s shows. Pick up some unique reminders of your trip at one of the many local markets, including the Albany Farmers Market or the Takapuna Flea Market, or browse an antique shop or head to a Westfield Mall for some air-conditioned comfort.

There’s still plenty more to do in Auckland. Take a ferry to Rangitoto Island and walk to the summit to explore the amazing views, or take a detour to explore the lava tunnels and caves. Along the way, the path will take you past rocky areas, bushlands and heaps of Pohutukawa trees. While you’re here, you’ll obviously want to experience the best of the Auckland CBD too, so check out the excellent food and shopping, Sky Tower and the Auckland Museum.
