Fairfield 4-Bedroom Semi-Detached Home: Your Spacious Family Retreat
Four bedrooms, high ceilings and a quiet, leafy street just 6km from the CBD. It sleeps up to seven, and two of those beds are bunks, so the kids will fight over the top one and the adults get a peaceful evening. It's all on one level too, so nobody has to haul luggage up a staircase.
The Space
110m² across four bedrooms, one bathroom and a powder room, plus a 60m² front garden and an 18m² private rear courtyard.
What You Actually Get
Room for seven, with a queen, a king single and two sets of bunks. The kids get the top-bunk negotiation they've been looking forward to all year, and the adults get a door they can close. It's all on one level with just one small step at the front door, so there are no staircase negotiations with luggage, prams or Nana. The polished concrete floors have a sleek terrazzo look and are easy to keep dust-free, which is a small miracle with kids in the house. The kitchen has a dishwasher and a proper coffee machine, which are the two things that actually decide a family holiday. The washer and dryer mean nobody is drying socks on a chair. Three of the bedrooms have desks, so homework doesn't have to happen at the dining table. Every bedroom has ceiling fans and block-out blinds for sleep-ins, and reverse cycle heating and cooling keep the living area comfortable all year. The instantaneous gas hot water means nobody gets the cold shower. There's a courtyard out the back with artificial grass that stays green whatever Melbourne's weather does. Games and books are on hand for when the screens need a rest, and the 46" TV with Chromecast is there for when they don't.
The Location, Without the Spin
Fairfield gives you suburban calm with the city not far away. Darebin Park and Fairfield Park are close by for a walk, and the Alphington Farmers Market runs every Sunday from 9am to 1pm. Moon Dog World, a boutique brewery, is nearby for craft beer fans, and the factory outlets are there for anyone who loves a bargain. The house sits between Fairfield and Alphington stations, both about a 15-minute walk, and a bus to the city stops at the end of the street. The CBD is a 20-minute drive, or about 45 minutes by public transport.
Where to Eat (We've Actually Been)
Mr Wednesday, Station St — a local favourite with genuinely good coffee, and the kind of café you'll end up at more than once without ever deciding to.
Fifteen Pounds, Railway Place — a solid all-day café near the station for an easy breakfast or lunch.
Harvest Foodstore — a buzzy café and grocer, good for breakfast and for stocking the fridge.
Fairfield Boathouse — right on the Yarra, for a slower morning or afternoon by the water.
Matsuya, Station St — teppanyaki cooked in front of you, which is dinner and a show in one, and the kids will be more entertained than they'd admit.
