Get the most out of your trip to Hobart with a stay in the CBD. You’ll find it a breeze to get around Tasmania’s capital city, see the charming heritage buildings and take in the quality food and drink. Whether you crave market shopping, art and culture or natural beauty, you’ll find it all when you book one of our Hobart CBD hotels.
Australia’s second-oldest city (Sydney is the first), Hobart began as a convict settlement in 1804. Back then, it was a collection of tents and huts. In the 1830s, the city became a centre of industry, and the Georgian warehouses you’ll find in spots like Salamanca Place were used to house goods.
Things to do
Wandering Hobart’s streets might just take your breath away (and not just because the weather could be a bit chilly). Warm and cosy pubs and restaurants in Colonial-era buildings welcome you in from the streets. Be sure to explore Salamanca Place, an area of cobblestone streets and old warehouses right on the Hobart harbour. It’s the home of the Salamanca Arts Centre, which has innovative theatres and galleries. Mount Wellington rises 1,271 metres over the city and stands like a guard against the sky, and one of the best things you can do it to drive all the way to the top and admire the incredible view, or even climb it if you’re feeling adventurous!
Check out the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, established 1843, for some fascinating exhibitions. The Playhouse Theatre and Theatre Royal have fresh new shows on all the time and make for an entertaining night out.
While you’re in town, make sure you visit MONA (The Museum of Old and New Art) in Berriedale or take a little trip to the Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens in Queens Domain. A stay in the heart of the Hobart CBD is the handiest location to see and do it all.
Shopping and dining
The lanes and arcades of the Hobart CBD offer all kinds of shopping, from brands to bespoke boutiques, but you can’t beat the Salamanca Markets, which is held every Saturday at Salamanca Place. With live music and over 300 stalls selling fresh food, handmade arts and crafts and all kinds of cool souvenirs. The Hobart CBD has cool bars with live bands and delicious snacks, while the food scene celebrates the Apple Isle’s fresh produce and wine. On Friday and Saturday nights, the restaurants and hips bars of Salamanca Place are, if you’ll pardon the pun, the ‘place’ to be.
