The Fairfield community is made up of many Greek and Italian families, many of whom have been here for generations. With all of the Italian locals, there are lots of great cafes and pizza restaurants. You'll also find a few ethnic restaurants and simple takeaway shops in town. While you're here, make sure that you take a walk along the banks of the Yarra River, or see if you can catch a Yarra Cod. There's also the pretty Merrie Creek Trail, which you can walk or cycle along. If you're bringing the kids, there are playgrounds at Breavington Park, Pitcher Park and Sparks Reserve, which are bound to keep them entertained while you sit back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. If you feel like getting active there's also a bowling club, aquatic centre and canoe club.
If you're here in March, you'll have the opportunity to attend two of the biggest annual events in Fairfield. There's the Feskyval Music Festival, where you can join in the esky races and enjoy the live music. There's also the Black Harmony Gathering, a multicultural event, with cuisine and performances from Indigenous Australians, as well as visiting guests from Africa and various islands. Another regular event in town is the Fairfield Farmers' Market, on every third Saturday of the month.
The great thing about Fairfield is that it's so close to the other Melbourne suburbs. The Melbourne CBD's only 8km away and quirky Fitzroy, home of many creative Melbourne artists, is only 5km away. Fairfield is also only 27km from the airport, and you can easily get around by bus or train. Having said that, parking isn't an issue in Fairfield if you decide to hire a car instead. So, for a laid-back holiday just a stone's throw away from the city buzz, check out these cheap flights to Melbourne and book your Fairfield accommodation now.
