North Island

Explore the Māori legends, Middle-earth scenery, cool cities, perfect beaches and volcanic scenery of New Zealand’s top island.

Kia ora, welcome to NZ’s North Island, shaped like Māui’s fish, according to the Māori creation myth. The fish’s mouth is Wellington, the country’s über-cool capital on the windy Cook Strait. The tail is marked by Cape Reinga and the action-packed Bay of Islands on one tip and the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula on the other. In between there’s Auckland’s stunning harbour, snowcapped volcanoes, icy blue crater lakes, dark caves and bubbling mud pools.
