The first thing that comes to mind when you visit Hong Kong is the fantastic shopping. The Central Market is a great place to start, which offers six floors of everything from inexpensive souvenirs and artefacts to premium Chinese items like ginseng root and traditional medicine. Check out the world's longest outdoor escalator and take a free ride from Central halfway up Victoria Peak. As you motor along the Hillside Escalator you have an awesome view into the narrow streets and Chinese apartment blocks that make up the Western part of the city.
Jump off at Staunton Street and walk through the vibrant cafe district. It's dubbed Hong Kong's Soho because it's home to the hottest restaurants in town - all offering fantastic cuisine. Grab a coffee and head down to the former headquarters of the Xingzhonghui (Revive China Society). It was established by Dr Sun Yatsen as the group dedicated to overthrowing the Chinese monarchy. Ultimately they were a success, and Dr Sun Yatsen was the first president of the Republic of China.
Man Mo Temple offers a wonderful insight into Chinese religious beliefs. With shrines contrasting the God of Literature 'Man' with the God of War 'Mo', it's a welcome retreat from the busy city sidewalks. Check out the ornate decorations while giant incense coils burn continuously and fill the air with a delightful scent.
Ladder and Cat Streets offer the most interesting shopping in Hong Kong. You can haggle over real (and fake) artefacts, souvenirs, bric-a-brac and a huge range of everything else. Love art? Check out Fung Ping Shan Museum because it's the best place to see traditional Chinese arts and crafts. They have an impressive display of porcelain and pottery dating back to the seventh century, and hold the world's largest collection of bronzeware from the Yuan Dynasty. No trip is complete without a stop at the Western Market. It's housed in one of the oldest buildings in Hong Kong and has a huge collection of handicrafts, fabric and souvenirs for sale.
