Love going to places you've never been? Likewise. But you don't have to get lost in the process. Read through our guide to East Sydney and you'll be roaming around like a proper local in next to no time.

East Sydney is one of the many neighbourhoods that make up Sydney. It's 2 kilometres southeast of the heart of the New South Wales state capital.

If curiosity's your middle name, you'll probably want to find out a few bits of trivia about Sydney — like how many locals call it their home. We can tell you that at last count the population was 4 600 000.

If money is looking a little tight, no need to stress! There's also a heap of free activities that you can experience while you're staying in East Sydney:

  • Are the youngsters missing their classroom already? Challenge their minds without putting your hand into your pocket at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Brett Whitley Studio.

  • Whether you're searching for entertainment, information or a little bit of culture, there'll be something for you at the National Art School Gallery, the King Street Gallery, the Ray Hughes Gallery and the Carriageworks. And the best part is that they're completely free.

  • For a memorable day out that won't cost you a cent, make your way over to The Spit Bridge to Manly Walk and Cremorne Point to Mosman Bay Walk.

  • What's a break without some time spent by the water? Work on your freestyle skills (or doggy paddle if that's more your style) at Wiley's Baths.

  • History isn't just found in stuffy textbooks, it's everywhere you look! Discover the legends of the area's eclectic past at sites like Sydney Harbour Bridge, the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales and the Customs House.

  • There's plenty to stumble upon in Railway Square and GPO Sydney. Stroll around the shops and get a taste of local life.

Must-see East Sydney

The Intersection is a great pub to go to for a few hard-earned beers and a laugh with mates. Curious what else you can do close by? Give a standing ovation to the cast at Capitol Theatre, a wonderful venue. There's even more if you're up for it. Travellers of all kinds of spiritual beliefs and cultural backgrounds will appreciate the significance of St. James Church.
