Before Europeans arrived, California’s Native American people spoke around 100 different languages. California didn’t become part of U.S territory until 1847, when the Mexican-American War ended. When gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in 1848, it led to a flux of new settlers, and California became the 31st state in 1850.
