From scenic cycles to adrenaline-fuelled mountain biking, the West Coast of New Zealand's' South Island is basically biking heaven on earth. Follow the network of historic tracks created by pioneer gold miners and timber millers through scenery that will blow your mind. Think remote rainforest valleys with tumbling waterfalls, dramatic snow-capped mountains, and sweeping bays fringed with palm trees. Mega drool.

Terrain could be anything from wide gravel trails to rocky singletrack, so you're sure to find something to suit your skills. There are loads of bike hire options, transfer services, and bike-friendly West Coast accommodation. All you have to do is turn up and ride!

The West Coast Wilderness Trail

  • When it comes to deciding what to do in West Coast, NZ, don't miss this stunning route with easy trails winding through spectacular landscapes.
  • The 135km trail runs from Greymouth to Ross, via Kumara and Hokitika. It'll take 2-4 days depending on your speed.
  • You can pack in other exciting activities, like ziplining or canyoning, along the way.

The Old Ghost Road

  • Planning a trip to the West Coast mountain biking hotspots? This epic trail combines spooky ghost towns with 85km of advanced alpine riding from Lyell to Seddonvile.
  • Up the adrenaline with one of the most thrilling West Coast adventure activities: heli-biking. Get dropped off at a chosen point in the trail and cycle your way out.
  • You'll find mountain huts to crash in on this multi-day trail.

The Paparoa Track

  • Created in memory of the 29 men who died in the Pike River Mine disaster in 2010, this trail is set to become a must on your West Coast itinerary when it opens in 2019.
  • Take in beech forests, Tasman Sea views and limestone crags as you ride through Paparoa National Park.
  • This is advanced-level mountain biking, so come prepared.
