South Stradbroke Island is separated from the much larger North Stradbroke Island by an area of sea called the Jumpinpin Channel. Nature lovers will enjoy it here as the island is mostly made up of beaches, rainforest and wetlands. It has 1800 hectares of national park and many native plants and animals, including the golden swamp wallaby, which is only found in southern Moreton Bay. It’s no surprise that the island draws many locals to its shores for weekend stays, day trips and other short visits.
Surfers will be thrilled with South Straddie’s 22km of white surf beach to choose from. You can also swim, fish or take a bush walk with ocean views. Feel like testing your strength? Have a go on the rock climbing wall. Tipplers Licensed Cafe is right on the beach, and you can enjoy a coffee or meal inside or in the outdoor section, where you might spot wallabies hopping across the sand around picnic tables. Head down at lunchtime on Sundays to catch live music.
Getting to South Stradbroke Island is easy. You can catch a ferry or water taxi or hire a boat from various departure spots including Runaway Bay, Main Beach and Sanctuary Cove.
