Hoan Kiem means "returned sword" and legend has it a giant turtle took a magic sword that was given to a king to defend against a Chinese invasion, carried the blade down into Hoan Kiem Lake and returned it to the gods. The lake sits in the middle of the district and is good for getting your bearings or taking a break from the busy streets. Locals practice Tai Chi here in the mornings and Turtle Tower, a charming little building on a small island out on the water is a pleasant sight during walks. At the north end is a red bridge that leads to Jade Island where you can explore the peaceful Temple of the Jade Mountain (Ngoc Son).

If you want to see a turtle, it’s best to visit the preserved one on display on Jade Island, because trying to catch sight of a live one is a bit like waiting for the Loch Ness Monster. Hanoi’s Old Quarter is the area northwest of the lake and a must-visit destination for its historical architecture dating back to the colonial period and beyond. Lively lanes with well-maintained, multi-coloured shop fronts clash with other streets with decaying walls, exposed brickwork and even mature trees, all adding to the aged and rustic atmosphere. The area has a night market that opens at 7pm has and sells electronic trinkets along with traditional house decorations. Though it’s beautiful area and a shopping haven, be wary of pickpockets and the price of anything you buy in the Old Quarter.

Hoan Kiem is also a hotspot for theatre performances, and the selection is impressive. Ca tru Hanoi Club offers a complete traditional performance experience, with a singer and accompanying musicians playing mesmerising tunes in a temple courtyard at night. The act is so special that it is promoted by the Vietnamese government and recognised by UNESCO. You may not understand the narration at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, but the puppets and special effects are fun.
