Planning a trip to the tropics? You don’t want to miss the Daintree Rainforest area in North Queensland! Our Daintree hotels are perfect to experience all the magnificent sights, smells and activities on offer in this green wonderland. You can choose from resorts, hotels, lodges and self-catering cottages – everything you need for your tropical escape.
The Daintree settlement, which is part of the Rainforest area, was created in the 1870s by timber-cutters and is located on the southern bank of the Daintree River just 20km north of Port Douglas and 60km north of Cairns. You can visit Daintree Village for a glimpse of how life used to be for the early settlers. The region was named after Robert Daintree; he was a geologist who discovered gold and copper deposits in northern Queensland in the 1860s and was a pioneer in the new art of photography. You too will be inspired to photograph this stunning area.
The Daintree Rainforest is the oldest surviving rainforest in the world and has been declared a World Heritage Area. It stretches over 1200km2 and is the largest rainforest area in Australia. It has survived for 160 million years and is home to thousands of different species, including 30% of Australia’s frog, reptile and marsupial species. If you’re a bird lover, a stay in one of our Daintree hotels means you will have 18% of Australia’s bird species right on your doorstep!
There’s plenty for you to experience. There are rainforest walks and, in small guided groups, you can explore the rainforest floor and see the ancient ‘green dinosaur’ plant, primitive flowering plants and brilliant birds in their natural habitats. You could take a Daintree River cruise through the rainforest and mangroves and spot the local wildlife as you glide past. For more adventure, head to nearby Cape Tribulation to try sea kayaking and explore the coastline, with its tropical beaches, reefs and mangroves. It’s a favourite place for spotting dolphins, sea turtles, or even dugongs. There’s also fishing and sailing. If you prefer wheels you might choose a 4WD tour.
Visiting the Daintree Rainforest area is a unique experience. There are so many things waiting for you in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Book your flights to Cairns and your Daintree accommodation with us below and be a part of this amazing piece of Australian wilderness!
