In the south east of Tasmania
lies the small town of New Norfolk, right on the beautiful Derwent River. Escape from the hectic pace of the city and come enjoy the peaceful surroundings, whether it's for a weekend away or a four-week holiday! Book from our range of great New Norfolk accommodation and sit back and soak in the surrounds.
Take a walk around the town and stop in at St. Matthews Church. It's the oldest in Tasmania, built in 1823. Gaze at the beautiful stained glass windows before heading to The Bush Inn, Australia's oldest hotel, for a bite to eat and a mug or two of beer. No day is complete without a full wrap-up of the history, so check out the Willow Court Historic Site and have a peek into the oldest mental hospital in Australia here. Kids big and small will love Alpenrail, a huge collection of model trains and railroads. It's so complex that it's rated in the top five best model railways in the world.
Continue your adventure around New Norfolk at the Rosedown Cottage Gardens and lose yourself in four and a half acres of beautiful roses and delightful gardens. Purchase a couple of flowers and head just outside of town to see the grave of Betty King, the first white woman to step foot on Australian soil. There are two great lookouts outside of town, Pulpit Rock and Peppermint Hill. Both offer panoramic views of the town and the river. Finish up your day with a stop in at the Salmon Ponds, where you can feed the fish and check out antique fishing gear in a great museum. For a bit more nature, the Bonorong Wildlife Conservation Park is great, letting you and your family get very close to many Tasmanian and Australian native animals.
