Easy central place to stay in Monterey. There was some road work being down so the time to the wedding venue was doubled but still under half an hour. The only downsides to our stay was the small sink (no counter) and the beds seemed closer to a double than a queen. But overall, a great place with easy access to everything.

Great location - didn’t love the room

Our stay was good, the hotel was beautiful and I liked to bar and restaurants. Location was great, loved having the wharf so close you could walk. The only disappointment was our room could’ve been nicer and kept up. There was rust all in the bathroom and just looked dated which was a bummer since the hotel lobby was so pretty

This is our second and probably last stay at the Portola Hotel. The first stay in 2024 was very good, so when wr decided to go on as a last minute trip, we booked this hotel despite other options avilable. Knowing it is the labor day weekend, we were aware it could be busy, but booked the last room available at close to $900 per night, tripling what we paid last time in an off season. When we arrived, it turned out that the room was an overflow room that they surely would not use normally. It doesn’t have elevator access, it doesn’t have an exterior window as the window opens to hotel lobby, and it doesn’t have any amenity prepared inside. When we raised the concern to the hotel front desk, all they could offer in compensation was a complementary breakfast for 2, despite we were a family of 4. The breakfast was mediocre at best and saved us $40 from the offer. Overall, despite the great location and decent amenities, we wouldn’t stay here again due to the inconsistent services.

The room was wonderful and clean, with fresh air coming in through the windows. Brian the bellman was fantastic. I am a bit perplexed how, for the rate, the pillows were not luxury pillows but rather lumpy balls of synthetic with a case enclosing the lumps. Additionally, the service on Sunday at Jack’s was hardly efficient; there was a long line at the host stand, the host was on the phone while people were standing waiting to be accommodated, and there were several empty tables. Jason the server at Jack’s was prompt and helpful.

A lovely hotel, great location for exploring Monterey and surrounding areas. The only thing to note is that you have to ask for housekeeping if you want it. We stayed for 3 days (family of 4 sharing one room) and asked each morning for our towels to be changed and more coffee delivered. We had more towels delivered and more coffee, but the previous days towels and used coffee cups were never removed, so we had a towel mountain by the end and a lot of used cups!

Weekend trip with two teens and a dog

Overall my stay was great! Walking distance to the beach and to many shops and restaurants. We did have an incident where a creepy man followed me into the elevator and up to the floor where my room was. I called security and they were all over it. They made me feel safe and kept me aware if the situation. In the end we had a great time. Thank you for keeping your guests safe!

I love the convenient location. There are a lot of shops and restaurants around the hotel. It is located next to Pacific historic park and the Old Wharf is just across. The staff were so nice and helpful.I have tried different hotels in the Montery Bay but Portola is the one I keep coming back and I fell in love with.
