For 21,000 years, Canberra was home to the Ngunnawal people. After Federation in 1901, it was chosen to be Australia’s capital. An international competition was held to design the city, and American architect Walter Burley Griffin won. The first Commonwealth Parliament House opened in 1927. In 1989, the ACT became a self-governing territory.
