All the shops in the airport offer a number of products featuring Lowest Price Guarantee labels, meaning they’re the cheapest they’ll get in the Netherlands. International fashion brands, fancy watches, jewellery and gadgets are all available. There are plenty of cafes and bars to relax in, an urban food market, a casino, a small museum of masterpiece paintings, and a black piano that’s perfect for keeping you entertained.
You can watch the goings-on on the airport runway from the open-air platform of the Panorama Terrace. There you’ll be able to explore a blue and white Fokker 100, take a look in the cockpit and listen to old traffic reports.
Things to see and do nearby
Next to the airport you’ll find the largest park in the city: Amsterdamse Bos, which provides a welcome escape from the busy airport for some fresh air. You’ll be able to wander plenty of tree-lined walking and cycling tracks, lush lakeside picnic areas, an outdoor theatre and a petting zoo.
A magical city filled with canals and harbours, Amsterdam has more water than any other city you’re likely to visit, with the exception of Venice! The locals get around on boats or bikes, and you can do the same when you spend time in this beautiful city. For a more romantic way to see the many sights, you can ride through on a horse and cart tour for around 10 Euros. Be sure to see the great works of art in Museumplein or Museum Square, considered to be the cultural hub of Amsterdam. Visit the Rijksmuseum, which houses Dutch artworks and cultural artefacts, the Van Gogh Museum and Rembrandt House Museum, Anne Frank’s house or the lovely green 47-hectare urban park known as the Vondelpark, where you can also find some lovely cafes and bars to while away the hours when the weather gets cold.
Design lover? Hooftstraat, Pieter Cornelisz or Van Baerlestraat are where you can channel your inner fashionista and discover some of the world’s most chic couture houses. If furniture design is more your thing, visit Moooi’s flagship store and gallery, as well as the hundreds of reasonably priced bespoke furniture boutiques and warehouses.
