The town is a great place to get high - literally! A number of operators offer gliding and hang gliding trips, perfect for admiring truly breathtaking views. With both feet firm on the ground, fly fishing is another popular activity in the town. Visitors can also trot through the gorgeous landscapes on horseback, enjoy terrific hiking and climbing, and relax in a blissful outdoor hot tub. There are several excellent wineries just waiting to be explored, and there are numerous places to enjoy a delicious meal and a drink.
At the heart of town there is a large statue of a sheep, and the countryside is home to many of these fluffyanimals. Learn more about the role of sheep in New Zealand's agriculture at the Wrinkly Rams Sheep Shearing Experience; it is a fun time for the whole family! Another major feature is the Clay Cliffs - an unusual series of rock formations with spiky pinnacles and plunging ravines. Go walking, cycling, and wildlife spotting in the Ahuriri Conservation Park, relax at Ladybird Hill, and take an excursion to the pretty Seven Lakes. And whatever you do, don’t miss the country's highest mountain, Mount Cook – though it’s pretty hard to not notice it looming in the sky!
