A town on the banks of the Proserpine River with a population of almost 4,000, Proserpine was named after Persephone, the Greek goddess of fertility. And a fertile place it is too! With cattle-grazing land and fields full of sweet sugar cane, it’s a hub of industry for the Whitsundays area. The area is surrounded by trees like strangler figs and, of course, cedars, and if you’d rather stay dry you can take a walk up the falls for a sweet view. In the other direction, 25kms inland from Proserpine is Lake Proserpine, also known as Peter Faust Dam. It’s a king-sized body of water teeming with barramundi and popular with the fishing folk. But you don’t have to cast a line to enjoy it. With a boat ramp, picnic area and children’s playground, it’s a great place to have family lunch, go for a little sail or indulge in some water skiing.

Ready to meet some crocodiles? Croc yourself out on the Proserpine River Eco Tour, with a boat ride down the river and the chance to see these scaly characters in their natural habitat. You can also jump on a tractor-drawn wagon-train and take a trip through the Goorganga Wetlands. If you’re a history buff, be sure to visit the Proserpine Historical Museum where you can find out all about the region’s sugar cane history, tourism and even its gold mining.

Proserpine is 25kms away from the popular Airlie Beach, a place to shop, party, hit the beach (of course) or swim in the man-made lagoon in the centre of town. You’ll be eager to explore the spectacular Whitsunday Islands like Hamilton Island and Daydream Island, where you can snorkel or dive into the bright, colourful world of the Great Barrier Reef, take a seaplane or helicopter ride or just relax by the beach or pool.
