• South Beach – Yup, the south Beach. It’s finally within your grasp. If you’re staying downtown, all you have to do is cross the MacArthur Causeway, but if you’re in one of those Art Deco joints along Ocean Drive, just cross the street. Enjoy the South Florida sun until it tans you to perfection, then head into one of the nearby bars for a delicious mojito.
• Everglades Tour – The city is only 45km from Everglades National Park, so book Miami car hire and make the quick drive west. Reserve a spot on one of the Everglades airboat tours and strap in for the ride of your life. You’ll whip around the swamps at what seems like the speed of a fighter jet while alligators dive for cover. Your hair might be permanently blown back after this.
• Little Havana – West of the downtown district is the neighbourhood of Little Havana, a great corner of the city where Cuban culture is alive and well. Head to Maximo Gomez Park and play a game of dominos with the locals, then head to a local café for Caribbean curry stew and fried plantains.
• Villa Vizcaya – The former mansion of businessman James Deering has been turned into one of the biggest tourist attractions in South Florida. Located on Biscayne Bay, you could spend hours wandering the spacious grounds of this sprawling estate. The museum is home to numerous works of European fine art, many of which were stolen in a 1971 heist perpetrated by three Russians. All works were recovered, so no worries.
