Underwhelming & Disappointing

We went as a group of 8 for the rugby in Cardiff and decided to stay at Celtic Manor to make the weekend that little bit more special. I left feeling underwhelmed and disappointed in the overall experience given the amount of money we paid. £20 per night to park in the underground car park, given the cost to stay, felt wrong. Check-in was quick even though there was a small queue on arrival. The front of house aesthetic was superb. Extravagant, clean, modern & spacious. There was plenty on offer from bars to a small coffee shop unit or even retail shops in the Celtic Mall. The room wasn’t anything special, no different to some 3* hotels I’ve stayed at. Quite spacious, but dated. The air con was “working” but, it wasn’t. So it was 25 degrees most of the time which wasn’t great to sleep in. That being said, the beds were comfortable. There was a fridge in the room but, no complimentary bottled water. The bathroom was big with a nice marble design and a separate shower area to the bath. Definitely in need of some investment to bring it up to 5* standard. Breakfast was a buffet style, which you expect in a hotel this size but, the quality was just “ok”. A good variety of choices between hot & cold food. I liked the separate gluten free table (not that I’m coeliac). You couldn’t fault the service, within a minute of finishing eating someone was there to clean it away. Some people had dinner and rated the restaurants very highly. Overall, 5* elements but, not worth the price.

First Stay at Celtic – A Mixed Birthday Treat

This was our first time staying at Celtic, and we were excited for a birthday celebration. The resort is huge, and our room on the 7th floor had a king-size bed and a very small TV. The bathroom lacked basics like shower gel and body lotion—only shampoo and conditioner were provided. Surprisingly, there was no bottled water in our deluxe room, which felt off for a 5-star hotel. We booked Sunday lunch at Rafters. Julie and Ruby were excellent hosts, and James on the shuttle was super friendly. A pianist was meant to play but left after about 30 minutes. Ptor, the manager, did kindly offer a glass of prosecco for the birthday. The lunch was nice but not amazing—and at over £200 including cocktails and wine, it should have been better. The dress code stated no t-shirts or trainers, yet several guests wore exactly that, which was disappointing. It feels like standards have slipped in favour of profit. Gundas in the Mulberry Bar was lovely when we sat outside to enjoy the sun. Breakfast was very busy, but we were seated quickly and the variety of food was excellent. Staff were helpful and attentive. We spent over £400 for one night, and while some aspects were enjoyable, the finer touches that define a 5-star experience were missing.

The non-functioning air conditioning on such an exceptionally hot day was truly disappointing, especially considering this was a premium resort. While the staff attempted a reset, it proved ineffective. The only alternative offered was a small fan, which unfortunately provided no relief whatsoever. When I expressed my dissatisfaction, the proposed resolution was a discount on a future stay. However, as this was my first visit to Wales and I don't travel here frequently, this offer felt inadequate. It's surprising, as even smaller hotels often provide more immediate compensation when issues are clearly their responsibility. This experience left me quite disappointed and fell short of the expectations I had for a resort of this caliber.

Lack of toiletries for the price paid. No water provided and limited to how much water you are allowed is pretty shocking considerimg the price of a room. Long wait for room service. Room service staff not very friendly. Extra charges added to room service. Room felt out dated. Balcony was dirty

The room and everything was amazing. However, the fan for the heating came on randomly and I was not able to adjust the fan or switch it off. I tried turning the fan down, but it just went back to full speed. This continued through the night.

Nice hotel. Breakfast could be better

We stayed for one night and played golf the following day. The hotel is very grand. Lovely rooms and very comfy bed. Unfortunately the breakfast wasn’t great. Lots of choice but the cooked breakfast was like warm. Hard fried eggs and the bacon was rock solid.

Lovely short stay

My recent stay here was lovely. + points: staff service/efficiency; standard of food; comfortable room/bed; pool and spa; views and ambience - points: bathroom cleanliness (hair ball on floor); lack of availability of full fat milk at breakfast; strength of water flow in bathroom (very weak)
