After the Burmese burnt Ayutthaya
to the ground in the late 1700s, Thonburi briefly became the capital city of Thailand
. Holding the position for only a few years before Bangkok
took over, Thonburi has remained a wonderful place to visit, filled with ancient temples, interesting museums and peaceful canals. Book your hotel in Thonburi and enjoy your holiday off the beaten tourist track.
Thonburi is home to the world famous Wat Arun (the Temple of the Dawn), which is as far as most tourists usually get. It's the most unique temple in the city and a highlight of Bangkok, resting peacefully on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. A small but beautiful temple, the majority of the decorations are made from broken pieces of pottery retrieved from shipwrecked Chinese trade ships. Climb the steps of the temple to get a spectacular view across the city and an idea of how the temple itself was built.
For something very different, Siriraj Hospital's Forensic Medicine Museum is a worthwhile stop, but not for the faint of heart. A one of a kind museum, they have some of the creepiest items you can imagine on display, including the preserved body of a Thai serial killer. It's easy to see how the Museum of Death earned its nickname. This centre is used as an educational centre for Thai students and is definitely worth a visit (unless you are at all prone to nightmares).
Get a feel for Thailand's history on the water in the Royal Barge Museum, housing some of the most elaborate and extravagant boats you will ever see. The most famous is the Suphannahongse, a 46m royal boat carved from a single piece of teak. This museum contains some of the most beautiful items in Thailand and is the only place you can see them as The Royal boats are rarely ever used on the river anymore. Hire your own long tail boat and explore the klongs and canals for a wonderful look into traditional Thai life. As you weave through tiny waterways, marvel at the houses set on stilts, the floating markets and the relaxed pace of life. Stop at a local snake farm where you can see the experts extract venom from some very dangerous snakes, and wander through the lush greenery of a pretty orchid farm right on the river. Don't forget your camera - you're sure to get some amazing photos!
Thonburi remains one of the best destinations in Bangkok, and is just across the Chao Phraya River from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Explore the best temples, unique museums and peaceful canals at your own pace, while you marvel at the strong history and culture of the Thai people. Book a great deal on your flight
and Thonbury accommodation today!
