Things to Do in Shenzhen

After landing at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZK), connect with one of Wotif’s Shenzhen car hire options and get ready to see the sights. Shenzhen has some of the best amusement parks in China, perfect for the kids (and the grown-ups!). They provide everything from historical dance shows and miniature replicas of well-known Chinese sites, to flume rides and golf courses. As one of China's greenest cities, Shenzhen is also covered with parks that offer interesting sights, such as spontaneous choirs singing revolutionary tunes, a petrified forest, a bird sanctuary, a safari park, numerous tea houses and some moderately strenuous hiking. Just be sure to plan ahead, as some of the walking paths can take five hours to complete. Want something a little more cultured? OCT-LOFT has transformed stark factory space into a rambling artistic gallery, and the Shenzhen Museum's exhibits detail the city's history.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

Shopping is where Shenzhen holidays really shine. Shenzhen has eight distinct commercial districts. Dong Men offers handbags, designer clothing, jewellery and high-tech gadgets. Sino-British Street is a largely tax-free zone, making it popular with bargain hunters. Massages and spa treatments are readily available, but know that the default technique of Shenzhen masseuses is, uh, vigorous. Be sure to say, "Teng, teng!" (pronounced "tongue" and meaning "pain") if a treatment begins hurting.

No Shenzhen holiday would be complete without sampling some of the city's cuisine, which incorporates regional fare from every corner of China. Futian District and CITIC Plaza have great high-end food, but think about browsing one of the city's famous Eat Streets. Low-key and friendly, these thoroughfares contain clusters of restaurants offering similar dishes. Huaqiang Bei serves up Hunan, Chaozhou and Uyghur food. Dongmen offers Cantonese, Sichuan, Thai and even German. Bagua First Road, the first Shenzhen Eat Street, has a little bit of everything, including excellent snake when in season.

The nightlife is never dull during holidays to Shenzhen. Whisky bars, disco clubs, European-style pubs—you'll find them all. Coco Park and Shekou have an awesome selection of places to party, but you'll also find tastefully understated clubs in Nanshan District and at least one very inexpensive beer garden in Bao'an District.
