Peregian Beach takes its name from the Indigenous word for emu. With mighty Norfolk pine trees growing on the shore, its main beach is a clean and beautiful place to surf and swim. Just a short walk from the beach, the Peregian Beach Shopping Centre has a grassy park with picnic tables and a bunch of cool shops and cafes. The shopping and dining spread out into the surrounding streets, offering everything from cafes and restaurants with seafood and deep-fried Mars bars (yum yum) to surf shops and fashion boutiques.
For many people, it’s their love of music that leads them to Peregian Beach, and on the first and third Sunday of every month, the local music and shopping come together for an alfresco day out. From 7am onwards, the Peregian Market takes over the grass at the front of the local surf club, selling arts and crafts, food and drinks and a variety of home-made and organic goodies. Stick around until 1.30pm for the Peregian Originals, where four diverse local or touring acts perform their own original music. With food and drink available, it’s a cool place to relax and listen to the tunes as the day turns to evening.
Those who crave the stillness of nature won’t miss out. Peregian Beach is surrounded by the 40 square kilometres of the Noosa National Park, which pulls over a million visitors a year. Wander from North Peregian Beach through sand dunes and bushland to North Marcus Beach, Lake Webya and Castaways Beach. For some terrific views, take a walk up Emu Mountain, located between Peregian and Coolum. It’s not a hard climb. In about 20 minutes, you can reach the top and admire the beach and town from above. Visit around October if you want to spot some whales.
