Hotels In Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie is the largest lake in Australia, stretching an enormous 24km - four times larger than the Sydney Harbour! When you stay in one of our Lake Macquarie hotels, you'll enjoy water sports and scenic dining experiences while you unwind in the laidback atmosphere.

History

Aboriginals inhabited the lake for about 8,000 years, naming themselves the "Awabakal" tribe, meaning "people of the calm surface". Thousands of years later, it's still the calm surface of the lake that draws holidaymakers and long stayers to the area.

Things to do

With the lake and 30 beaches in the surrounding area, some of the most popular activities around here include sailing, kayaking, jet skiing and fishing. But if you want to really relax, do as the locals do and pull anchor, then just let your boat drift along. Now that’s relaxed!

If you're a cyclist, you'll love exploring the lakeside cycling tracks. Make sure you stop off at Warners Bay and Redbluff Boardwalk along the way to take some photos and grab a coffee. You can also check out the koalas at the Wangi Wangi Point Flora and Fauna Reserve or ride the 16km to Newcastle on the Fernleigh Track.

The area's peaceful surroundings inspire many creative souls and art is a big part of the Lake Macquarie community, so make sure you visit some of the local galleries and studios. If you don't have time to see any other gallery, don't miss Dobell House, the residence of the late Sir William Dobell, a world-famous local artist.

Dining and shopping

There are heaps of jetties where you can drop a line and try your luck at catching your dinner. But if the fish aren't biting, don't worry - there are plenty of waterfront cafes and restaurants to appease your growling stomach.

When it comes to shopping, market lovers will be pleased to know that there's a different market on almost every weekend – from Swansea to Warners Bay, you'll find a treasure trove to dig through.

Getting here and around

Sydney is only an hour and a half away and Newcastle is about half an hour away, so take your pick of these cheap flights to Sydney or these affordable airfares to Newcastle. There are regular trains and buses to Lake Macquarie from both Sydney and Newcastle and once you've arrived, you can easily get around on public buses and ferries.

So take a well-deserved break and check out our great range of Lake Macquarie accommodation.
