    Pocket Guide: Colombo

At first glance, Colombo can may seem like a literal definition of "urban sprawl" and a capital city trying to make up for the rural calm that covers nearly all of Sri Lanka, but even as you make your way into town from the airport you’ll see flashes of the charm and beauty that leap out at you once you go looking. Start at one of our Colombo hotels and you’ll discover a city with plenty to offer.

Everything here is colourful, from culture to coast. You can hop on a tri-shaw (make sure you get a metered one) and weave through the city centre or visit the Colombo Zoological Gardens to see elephants, sea lions and hippos. If you want to see what makes Sri Lanka’s capital tick, you have to walk through locales like Pettah Market, where every lane caters to a different type of product,. Test your taste buds with everything from roti to Indian curries and seafood, and perhaps mingle with locals as they watch a cricket match to get swept up by their passion.

Colombo’s architecture is quite a sight, with colonial influences from the Portuguese, British and Dutch on display. If exploring a fascinating mix of buildings is your thing, make sure you visit the area known as Fort Skyscrapers. Here, colourful Hindu temples and sombre Buddhist statues and shrines are all part of Colombo’s intriguing mix. Galle Face Green Promenade is another notable stretch of coastline located in the city. A half-kilometre stretch of land wide enough to accommodate picnics, vendors and playing children, both the atmosphere and sunsets at the Green are spectacular.

Of course, not every Colombo attraction requires rough-and-tumble exploring. Golfers can go for a round at Royal Colombo Golf Club and the nightlife certainly has its share of class. Mount Lavinia, not far south of the city centre, has a stretch of beach lined with bars, resorts and restaurants right on the sand. If you want a fine meal and relaxed drinks by the sea, this is the place to be. Travellers more partial to proper nightclubs won’t be disappointed either – but make sure to pack long pants and covered shoes, as at a lot of venues the beach dress style ends at the door!

Come May or June, Colombo celebrates Vesak, a festival held on the first full moon in Taurus, marking the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha. It is the biggest festival in the city, with reverence and celebrations lasting a week. Lanterns play a big role, decorating the outdoors and being made in competitions. It is a very charitable time, with free food often offered at stalls, and many Sri Lankans visit the city from rural areas.

A colourful city with a lot of heart, start immersing yourself in Colombo by taking the first step and figuring out how to get there and where to stay. Book from our flights to Sri Lanka, and Colombo accommodation list today!
