The total cost of $380.00 for a single night’s accommodation was grossly disproportionate to the standard of the room provided. The room was extremely small, with a bed that was excessively firm and uncomfortable. The stay was further compromised by the motel’s location on a heavily trafficked street, which produced continuous noise, and by heavy overnight rainfall, which, given the roof’s low clearance of less than three metres from the floor, made restful sleep virtually impossible.
While we acknowledge that AgQuip was being held in Gunnedah at the time, the tariff charged clearly reflected opportunistic price gouging, particularly as the same room is advertised at approximately $116 for the following week. This represents a near threefold increase for identical accommodation, a practice which is both excessive and unjustifiable.
As parents who travel regularly to Tamworth for school commitments — a practice that will continue for at least the next six years — we are prepared to pay premium rates for quality, modern accommodation. However, in this instance, the standard fell well short of what could reasonably be expected for the price charged.
