Pocket Guide: Krabi Railay Beach Hotels

The coast in southern Thailand is spectacular. Escape from the development of Phuket and visit Railay Beach. A tropical paradise surrounded by the azure waters of the Andaman Sea, isolated by towering limestone cliffs, the only way in or out is via boat. Stay at a Railay Beach hotel, and come enjoy this little piece of paradise!

The most famous activity on Railay Beach is surprisingly not a watersport - it’s rockclimbing! The limestone cliffs are steep, giving a challenging climb to anyone brave enough to attempt to scale them. Just starting out? You can do a course and learn how to rock climb, as the local businesses cater for every fitness level. Once you’ve worked up a sweat, cool off in the lovely clear waters. It’s clear and calm for snorkelling, sea kayaking or simply laying out in the sun with a good book.

A beachside massage will soften away any aches from the climb and once you’re feeling adventurous again you can try white water rafting or book an elephant trek and tour the lush rainforest from the back of one of Thailand’s gentle giants. If you enjoy the meals in your resort, why not take a Thai cooking course and discover how easy they are to make once you get back home. Take a stroll through the lovely paths crossing the island, keeping an eye out for the cheeky monkeys that will happily relieve you of a bag of fruit!

As you explore the island be sure to stop by Phra Nang Cave, where the rock formations inside glitter as if covered in a million tiny diamonds. On the northern end of Phra Nang Beach is a shrine, dedicated to the drowned spirit of the goddess Phra Nang. The most notable feature of this little shrine is the dozens of carved red tipped phalluses that have been donated by fishermen seeking the goddess’s favour – an interesting photo for the album back home!

Railay Beach’s isolation has allowed it to escape the development seen in Phuket and other areas of Thailand. Though only a two hour drive from Phuket, the best way is to fly into Krabi and take a taxi to Ao Nang, followed by a short boat ride to paradise. Find a great deal on accommodation in Railay Beach and discover for yourself how great this secluded little bay really is.
