The main town of the Moree Plains Shire region, Moree is the traditional home of the Kamilaroi people. The first general store appeared on the township in 1852, followed by a post office the year after. In 1895 the town’s famous warm mineral waters were discovered by accident during a search for a reliable water supply. For some old-fashioned charm take a walk through Moree’s art-deco themed town centre. Moree sits on the banks of the Mehi River, and nearby parks such as Mary Brand Park are great places to take an afternoon walk or picnic with the family beneath the fig trees. Do you go nuts for nuts? Just 30kms from Moree is the Trawalla Nut Farm, a 700-hectare property. It’s the largest pecan nut plantation in the Southern Hemisphere and you can reach it by guided tour only. With taste-testing and pecan slice thrown into the tour, pecan lovers would be nutty to miss it.

Moree is about five and a half hours from Brisbane and seven and a half hours from Sydney, and sits at the intersection of the Newell and Gwydir Highways.
