Mansfield acted as a service centre during the Victorian gold rush and some buildings from the 1840s still remain to this day. Another interesting fact is that a few of the local police officers were killed by Ned Kelly during his bushranger days. In the town centre, you can check out the marble monument that was erected in their memory in the year 1880.

Mansfield is the gateway to Mount Buller and Mt Stirling, so make sure you bring your ski gear! If you're here in summer, you can go bushwalking, abseiling, horse riding or biking on the mountains. Alpine National Park is Victoria's most expansive national park and is picture-perfect all year round. Mount Samaria State Park is smaller, but you can go swimming, fishing and boating on nearby Lake Nillahcootie; or just have a picnic on the shore.

For a fun outing, play a round at the local golf club, visit the Mansfield Zoo or take the challenge of the 40 meter by 40 metre High Country Maze.

You can pick up essential items at the local supermarket and enjoy some locally-produced goodies at the Mansfield Farmers' Market on the fourth Saturday of the month.

Melbourne Airport is the closest airport, about 180km away. So grab one of these cheap flights to Melbourne and then jump aboard a train or bus to Mansfield. Once you arrive, you'll find it easiest to get around town by car, so you might want to hire one at the airport.
