Formerly a priest’s house, Casale la Canonica clusters behind the church that greets you at the top of the drive. Set in its own grounds and curved around a paved courtyard, the property, with its different segments and levels, has the appearance of a minuscule hamlet. With six generous bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, this is a wonderful option for parties of up to 12 people, be they groups of extended family or friends. Siena, San Gimignano and Florence are within easy reach for days out and the Chianti towns of Castellina and Radda are close enough to walk to.

For days at home, the generous pool is steps away from the villa. Surrounding greenery makes this completely private. Shallow and deep ends will please swimmers of all abilities. A simple gazebo to one side is a great spot for al-fresco meals. But the villa’s atmospheric, spacious interiors which speak of its history – oil paintings add richness to the clean white-washed walls, terracotta floors and beamed ceilings – also provide lovely places for retreat.
