Better that what I expected from the reviews.

On reading the other reviews for the hotel I expected a hostel experience that I've had while traveling Europe and the US, however this hotel far exceeded my expectations. The staff were friendly, always willing to help and seemed capable of speaking many languages, the buildings were clean and well maintained and the rooms, while being somewhat small, were clean and comfortable with all the amenities you could need. (Except for a hairdryer, which is apparently important to some.) I can understand why some people think it's a hostel, because there is a shared kitchen down the hall and room service only applies if you're there longer than six days, but if you needed new sheets, towels or anything else all you had to do was simply ask. Doesn't seem like too much of a hardship. All I can say is that in my opinion the hotel was excellent and I would not hesitate to return and those who expected five star service for the pennies they paid for their stay are expecting a little too much. I doubt they could ever give a satisfactory review.

Would consider this hotel again but not 1st choice

Was shocked to find out you have to pay extra to have your room cleaned or towels changed. Quite difficult to clean the shower yourself as the shower head is fixed. Good location, 2 metro stops from the ramblas or the beach with 2 different lines close by. Shared kitchen was a bonus for cheap breakfast and use of fridge and freezer. Staff helpful and friendly.

Not a good experience, check in is at three but we get there a little early so we decided to leave our belongings we came back at 6:30 our room wasn't ready yet so they make us wait for like 45 minutes then we were told we can't have friends visitors because of the facilities policy... It would be nice if they tell you that when you book ur room

Comfortable but secluded

The Residencia Melondistrict Marina is apparently actually dorms for students during the year. In the summer though, most of the students are gone and it is clearly rented out by tourists like us. The rooms being dormlike are quite compact and small, and they do not have any beds larger than a full size. Although they are tight quarters, but they are designed well and quite functional. We slept well and comfortably. If on the other hand you really need your space, pick a different hotel, it can be quite tight, especially with 2 people in a room. There is a pool (which we didn't get a chance to use), and a common area with couches, a TV and a kitchen. There is a fridge and each room has their own "cubby" or drawer inside the fridge (clearly intended for longer stays). There are vending machines to buy snacks and a cafe that serves breakfast downstairs. Housekeeping doesn't come everyday since these are intended to be dorms, but free wifi is available in the room. So although the hotel is quite comfortable and I'm sure quite convenient for students, but there are very few restaurants in the area and no supermarkets or grocery stores. The area feels very residential and quite secluded. So on my next visit to Barcelona, if I can manage to find a hotel that is more central, that would be my preference, but if I cannot find something at a reasonable price then I certainly wouldn't mind staying here again since it was quite a comfortable stay.

It's a Hostel!

The room was very, very small, the air conditioner did not work at first, the pool had skin floating in the water, and do not think you will be able to enjoy an evening view from the terrace because they lock the entire roof at 10 PM. Also, you only get two big and two small towels for your entire stay—they charge you if you want another set of towels and there are no towels available for use at the pool. The food at the cafeteria was inedible—we tried a breakfast and a dinner.

Good for a budget but bring your walking shoes.

Having never been to Barcelona we found it difficult to find where to stay in relation to things at a reasonable price. Although this does suit a budget - it is exactly that - budget. One of the more disappointing stops on our stay, the cooling wasn't fantastic nor was the comfort level for the price (more like a hostel). Also on checkout, they could not find one of our stored bags in their (overcrowded) storerooms so we're left waiting around 15-20 minutes. These were manageable factors as we were exploring a lot anyway, but by far the least mentioned thing was its distance from.... Basically everything. You are looking at a 20 minute walk to the beach (which is far when it is his to high 30's) and a similar stroll to the shops and dining near the gothic quarter. Overall clean and manageable, but much too far from everything and made our stay much more tiring than it could have been. Do not stay if you are looking to be in the centre of things.

I liked it

The room was very small, but I'm used to being in a small room. It did have a private bath though, so it's good for me. I was there for 2 weeks and that got me a free room cleaning, but they charge for it otherwise. The beach is 15 to 20 minute walk, unless you want the barceloneta. There is a metro station close by and lots of stores and eateries. Lots of young people and students stay there but it is not loud or annoying. There is a pay laundry and a restaraunt on the premises. If I come back to Barcelona I would not hesitate to re-up on this hotel.

Stay at Melon. Best of BCN on a budget.

This was our third trip to BCN in as many years. Previously we have stayed in 4* hotels. I have to say, Melon was just as good. Yes, the room was smaller, but there was so much storage space, it didn't seem to matter. We both slept really well and made good use of the kitchen, which saved us lots on eating out. The wifi was excellent in our room and in the kitchen area - which also had comfy sofas, a large to and large table to eat at. We also used the onsite laundry which was €7 to wash and dry and for detergent. Excellent! Saved me £60 I would have paid to bring a larger suitcase!! Will definitely stay there again. Staff were excellent too. Great location - could see Sagrada Familia from our kitchen. And rooftop pool was fab. You can't go wrong. Especially on a budget. We walked place the 4* we stayed at last year and both said we preferred Melon!!

The hotel is great for the price. Rooms are small but clean. Hotel staff are very helpfull and friendly and hotel is modern and clean. Rooftop pool is great and really makes the hotel. Location is around 20 minute walk to centre or beach but was no problem for us. It's a couple of minute walk to metro station and plenty of cafes and a 24 hr supermarket.

Didn't get time to use all the facilities!

Great location for transport connections, museums, the theatre and shopping at Els Elcants and Glories. The tram to the Primavera site stops 5 minutes walk away which is invaluable. Rooms are compact but well equipped for storage, there's a working safe and good lighting. Beds may be a little firm for some tastes! The combination of the cafe and vending machines is incredibly useful, security was good and it's a quiet neighbourhood.

Great value for the money in a reasonable location

The hotel is split between being student dorm and a hotel. In the summer it's mostly hotel patrons. The rooms are efficiently laid out - with a single or double sized mattress, a small desk, and a small bathroom with a shower stall. The staff were extremely friendly and professional. The hotel has a pool, patios, and on premises laundry, making it convenient for travellers. Bikes can be rented and there is a taxi stand outside the building. The hotel is located in an industrial area, so there's little in the way of retail shops and restaurants. It's also near a number of night clubs, but I didn't hear any noise at night (and I'm an extremely light sleeper). Early Sunday morning you can see people stumbling home after a night of fun!

noisy dorm and very small room

We stayed here for two nights. Good things about this hotel is the nice front desk staffs and front door security. But there too many worst points in this hotel. This is like a dormitory for travelers staying. At night, we hear lots young people fooling around and shouting in the hallway and they banged the door loudly no matter how late in the night. No one washed the dishes in the kitchen area and it is always a mess there. The room is very very small. The bathroom can only fit in one person. We don't recommend this hotel if you have other better choice.
