What’s not to love about Barcelona? While it’s the second largest city in Spain, Barcelona has its own history and identity. Catalan, not Spanish, is the official language. The city also has all the amenities travellers want, like a big airport, walkability and ridiculously delicious food. So forget the in-flight meal and get ready for Spain’s second-largest city!
The city centre is super-walkable, but you might want to jump on the Metro subway to get around. On the other hand, the RENFE train is above ground, so you can still check out the city. Renting a bike is also a great option, and of course there’s always one of our car hire deals if you don’t want to have to worry about finding transportation after Barcelona flights. Just walk up to the counter and collect your ride!
If you land early in the day, why not climb aboard a tourism bus? You get on/off privileges on any bus on the same route and headphones, so you can listen to the guide speak in just about any language. Should your flights to Barcelona land in the afternoon, check out some Gaudi (not to be confused with gaudy!) architecture such as Parc Güell and La Casa Batlló. After dark, head straight to the Placa d’Espanya and enjoy the musical fountain show before checking into Barcelona hotels for the night.
For being an unfinished church, La Sagrada Familia is one of the most popular sites in Barcelona, so you should definitely check it out. For something more mellow, get paella at an open-air market and chow down while dipping your toes in the water off the edge of a wooden bridge in Cuitat Vella.
