With its café culture, buzzing music scene, and the eclectic architecture, Melbourne is already putting out some seriously cool city vibes. But add to that the public art galleries in its inner-city laneways and you’ll never want to leave.
Heading to this neck of the woods soon? Here are six of the coolest laneways in Melbourne that you’ve got to check out – with your camera, of course!
1. Hosier Lane
Have you even been to Melbourne if you haven’t strolled down Hosier lane and taken at least 500 photos? Absolutely not. Hoiser Lane is one of Melbourne’s most popular alleyways and you could easily spend a whole afternoon here, taking in the kaleidoscope of colour on the gritty brick walls.
Where is it? Across the road from Federation Square.
2. Caledonian Lane
Not only is this tiny lane a hub for street artists, but it’s also home to a bit of local history. This is where the first St Jerome’s Laneway Festival took place before it became an international favourite.
Where is it? Between Lonsdale and Little Bourke Streets.
3. AC/DC Lane

As you might have guessed from the name, AC/DC Lane is a homage to Australia’s favourite rock band. The laneway got its name in 2004, and the video clip for the AC/DC hit ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top’ was filmed just around the corner on Swanston Street. This lane was even home to a piece by the world-renowned Banksy, but it was destroyed during construction.
Where is it? Between Flinders Lane and Flinders Street.
4. Duckboard Place
You have to walk along Duckboard Place to get to AC/DC Lane and it’s well worth the wander. Here you’ll spot some seriously HUGE pieces of street art that are absolutely out of this world.
Where is it? Off Flinders Lane.
5. Rutledge Lane
This pocket of street art paradise became the centre of controversy in 2013 when one artist painted the entire lane blue, supposedly to give other artists a new, blank canvas (but painting over a lot of existing art in the process). A whole lot of protesting took place, but Rutledge Lane is now full to the brim with colourful images again.
Where is it? Off Hosier Lane.
6. Union Lane
What Union Lane lacks in space (it’s tiny!), it makes up for in colour. This little gem of a lane is full of bright images and crazy characters.
Where is it? Off Bourke Street.
