In years gone by, Zurich West was an industrial district crammed with noisy factories. These days, the warehouses still stand but they've been renovated and kitted out as funky nightclubs, galleries and restaurants. So while you're here, you'll have infinite choices when it comes to going out at night.

If you're looking for something to do during the day, put the Swiss National Museum at the top of your list of places to visit. Here you'll find Swiss relics from all the way back in the Stone Ages right up until now, all housed in a huge neo-Gothic architectural wonder built in 1889.

This district is also famous as Zurich's art precinct. The Kunsthalle Centre of Contemporary Art, located in what used to be a brewery, is a fantastic place to get in touch with your creative side and check out the inspirational work of some of the local and international artists. Just a floor below, in the same former brewery, you'll find the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art, which displays the work of up-and-coming artists, as well as lots of Andy Warhol pieces. And with Switzerland at the forefront of graphic design for a number of decades, Museum Fur Gestaltung is the country's most significant design museum. So, if you consider yourself a bit of a graphic design geek, make sure you pop by and take a look.

Getting Here

The Zurich Airport is only about 10km away from the western district and you won't have any trouble at all getting around on the public trains and buses. To save yourself a few dollars, grab a ZurichCARD (the local transport card), which you can use on any tram, bus, train, ferry or cable car in the city.
