Surrey is a county of the United Kingdom
split into 11 districts. These days, it’s a place for well-off Londoners to buy houses and commute to the city for work. In the past, it was the home of literary greats like Jane Austen and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who used it as a setting for some of their famous stories.
Things to do
Surrey has much to offer history buffs: Polesdan Lacey is the former home of Edwardian hostess Margaret Greville, who entertained celebrities and royalty in the start of the 20th century. It has glorious gardens and views of the hills outside, and fancy rooms with plenty of art on the inside. Hampton Court Palace is a historic royal palace where you can wander in a hedge maze and poke around in Henry VIII’s kitchen. If you’re in the mood for a show, see what’s on at Richmond Theatre, a grand old theatre with a gilt interior that opened in 1899.
If you feel like unwinding, Leith Hill is the highest point in Southeast England. From its Gothic tower, you can see sweeping views all the way to London. You can also walk in the ancient woodland and wander around the heath. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew has glasshouses, colourful flowers, beautiful plants and a walkway over the canopies of trees. Among Surrey’s many other parks you’ll find Windsor Great Park, which is 5,000 acres and includes the Leptis Magna Ruins, a monument taken from the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Leptis Magna in Libya.
But it’s not all about history and nature: Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures are amusement parks offering fun for you and the kids with a range of wild rides.
