I'm confident that 20 years ago when the Zermatt was built it was a 5 star resort. Sadly age and lack of maintenance has taken it's toll on the property. You can still tell how it looked back in the glory days, but those days are long gone. To still call this a "resort" is probably disingenuous.
Some examples:
The pool table has tears in the felt covering and the 8 ball rack is broken (taped together but the tape is broken too).
The shuffle board court is unusable due to lack of paint result in a very rough surface.
The giant outdoor chess pieces are falling apart.
The carpet in the halls is threadbare & torn in places.
On the first floor, there is a large section of the ceiling that is missing and replaced with plastic sheeting.
The grounds are mowed, but clearly not manicured as you might expect at a resort.
On a positive note, the mini-golf course is in pretty good shape as is the carousel. The indoor/outdoor pool and hot tubs are nice and seem to be in good shape as well.
With a significant investment in maintenance, the Zermatt could be restored to a 5 star resort. I don't know if there is enough traffic or the will to do so.
