Speaking of calm, just west of Pak Kret Market you’ll find Koh Kret, an island almost as free of ogling tourists as it is free of cars. Go on two wheels instead—rent a bicycle and spend a day pedalling around to markets, cafes and the famous leaning bell tower. Taste some suds at the microbrewery, then stuff your face with the local specialty, mon tempura: deep-fried veggies and shrimp in a banana leaf bowl.

Up for a little more action? Take a scenic ride down the river on the Chao Phraya Express Boat. Get off at Tha Chang Terminal for the Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha Temple, then make your way to Bangkok National Museum.
