8/10 Good

It is a nice hotel with character. The staff are very welcoming, especially the gentleman on reception who was extremely helpful and very engaging. The room was comfortable with a good bathroom and bed - perfect hardness of mattress - and very quiet. Dinner was good - a perfectly cooked piece of cod in an interesting sauce and good ice-cream. The wine selection lacks French wine by the glass completely and in general there are far too many New World wines - why this common obsession? European wines are better and come from nearer, so kinder to the environment too. The breakfast is not as good as it should be. Cheeses in small cellophane packing are simply not acceptable in a 4-star hotel. There was a very sparse fresh fruit salad - tinned peaches and apples in syrup. The juices are all third rate. The pastries are OK, but one would expect hams and cheeses fresh and unwrapped. And it is tiresome to have to do absolutely everything oneself, though I know this is common in many three-star hotels. This one has four stars. If it is effectively a buffet, it should be a much more varied one. The cooked food looked disgusting but I can't say what it was like - I didn't want any. I might have enjoyed a freshly poached egg, had there been someone to poach it for me. In a similar level establishment in say Germany, there would be someone MAKING egg dishes. I didn't complain - I didn't want to embarrass the charming staff.
