Karuizawa only good for outlets and ski resorts?

The small resort hotel reopens strictly at 4pm for check-in… We were sort of stranded in the cold as we arrived at Karuizawa early slightly after lunchtime, we couldn’t even deposit our luggages as the hotel main doors were locked… Then hotel will be closed again from 11pm to 6am, there’s nothing much to do in Karuizawa after dark to speak of… Otherwise all were fine with expected Japanese-run standards. Onsen was good as praised in reviews.
