Holidays To Kamakura

Little Kamakura might not be what you expect from a place that served as Japan’s first feudal capital for over a thousand years, but it will soon conquer your heart.

An odd mix of relaxed beach town and serene land of temples, Kamakura has a vibe all its own. Kamakura lies just 50 km from Tokyo, making it an extremely popular day trip. If you are considering Tokyo holiday packages, add on a Kamakura package deal. You’ll appreciate this relaxing and lovely retreat.

Things to Do in Kamakura

Hop on the train at Tokyo Station and watch the big city and all its skyscrapers fade into the distance as you make your way to Kamakura Station. Though Kamakura is served by a public bus system, you may want to consider booking one of Wotif’s Kamakura car hire options, as the city’s many temples are scattered throughout the territory.

Start your Kamakura holiday by walking back through the centuries as you visit the many beautiful temples that were built in the time of the samurai. Definitely stop off at the Kenchoji Temple in North Kamakura, which is one of the five Zen temples in Kamakura as well as one of its oldest temples in the country. If you’re looking for even more Zen, go straight to the big guy himself. Not Santa Claus—Buddha! Visit Kōtokuin, where a huge statue of Buddha grins down on the crowds. For a small payment, you can walk inside the statue! Poof—you are the Buddha.

Kamakura also offers visitors some fantastic hikes. This is a great time to get lost, because you never know when you might just stumble upon a small temple overlooked by the crowds.

Now that you can ohm with the meditation masters, get further in tune with the earth at Kamakura’s great beaches. Some of its best spots include Yuigahama, Inamuragaskai and Shichirigahama. Wait, is that your tummy grumbling? Time to focus on getting you fed!

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife in Kamakura

You really can’t beat the shopping opportunities in Tokyo, but little Kamakura has a few mementoes up its sleeve to entice you. You’ll find plenty of souvenir fodder at the train station and the most popular temples. Besides the normal postcards and other knickknacks, indulge in a Giant Buddha pastry stuffed with red bean paste. Mmmmmm, now you’re really one with Buddha.

Buddha pastries aside, you’ll discover plenty of other dining options over your holiday in Kamakura. Many restaurants and snack shops crowd around the train station. You can also find some more upscale, organic places around town. If you just need a quick pick-me-up and don’t fancy biting Buddha’s head off, try a hatosabure, a biscuit shaped like a pigeon.

During the summer months, you’ll want to make your way to (or back to) the beach as the sun goes down. Temporary bars keep the drinks coming and even host DJs and live music, so you can dance to the accompaniment of the crashing ocean waves.

What’s Next?

You don’t need to meditate on where to find cheap Kamakura package deals. Wotif lets you compare prices and put together Kamakura packages for a full holiday or a great day trip from Tokyo. We promise that Buddha will give you a big smile when he see you!
