If you're planning a trip to Italy, don't skip Sardinia, a Mediterranean island off the country's west coast. The island's striking cliffs, craggy mountains and remote villages are a must-see stop on your Italian holiday. Whether you're a beach bum or a history buff, you'll find there's plenty here to entertain. After a stay at one of the hotels in Sardinia, we doubt you'll want to go home.
Check in to your Sardinia accommodation and make a beeline for the island's famous beaches. The Maddalena Archipelago, a UNESCO site, offers clear waters, drop-dead gorgeous vistas and boat rentals. More of a hiker? Trek the limestone cliffs of the Orosei Coast, or climb Punta La Marmora, the island's highest peak.
Check out the hundreds of nuhragi, ancient hive-like stone fortresses that are unique to the region, or check out the beautiful medieval village of Castelsardo. Later, if you're gastronomically gutsy, try a bite of casu marzu, a local sheep's milk cheese containing live maggots. Bonzer! If you don't "larva" it, wash it down with one of the island's specialty wines.
Fly in to one of Sardinia's three airports: the Cagliari-Elmas Airport (CAG) in Elmas, the Olbia Airport (OLB) in Olbia or the Alghero-Fertilia Airport (AHO) in Fertilia. Alternatively, take a ferry over from Italy's mainland. There are bus and train systems on the island, but most travellers find it easiest to rent a car. Just try not to ram into of the 4 million sheep wandering about—they won't thank “ewe” for it!
