On the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula
, Cape Jervis is most well known as the hub to grab a ferry to Kangaroo Island
. But visitors are often surprised at how much there is to do in this quaint little town, from fishing to bushwalking and lovely national parks. Find the right accommodation in Cape Jervis and spend a day or two exploring the quieter areas (and avoid the tourists on Kangaroo Island!).
Cape Jervis is located on the tip of the Deep Creek Conservation Park, so it’s no surprise hikers are always coming to town to start the world-famous Heysen Trail. The trail is 1200 km of one of the most spectacular long distance hikes. If that’s going to take a little bit too long to achieve, there are plenty of shorter hikes through the national park that you can finish in a day. Take a stroll and marvel at the towering cliffs and magnificent views of the Southern Ocean.
The local beaches offer surfers plenty of options, with great breaks to be found anytime of the year. Do remember to pack a wetsuit – even in summer the water can be quite chilly! Explore the beaches and the remains of the trawler ‘Ellen’ on Morgan Beach and a historic whaling station on Fisheries Beach – both offer the chance for great photos. Wind up your day with a visit to McLaren Vale, one of Australia’s best (and oldest) wine regions that consistently produces magnificent wine.
Try your luck at catching dinner, with many charter boats offering deep sea fishing experiences and the chance to hook the next big one, or simply throw a line in from the beach. There are endless fishing spots along the headlands and the sand. Divers have so many sites to explore fantastic shipwrecks and stunning marine life – see if you can spot a leafy seadragon as it blends in with the seaweed.
Just 108km south of Adelaide
, Cape Jervis is much more than a destination to ‘fly by’ as you head over to Kangaroo Island. Take some time out to stop in at this excellent region and see something that most other tourists simply miss. Check out our range of Cape Jervis hotels, find the one for you and start planning your holiday to this awesome beachside retreat.
