Music and the arts are a big part of life in Oakland. With a neighbor like San Francisco, the city manages to attract a regular stream of international stars. But it also nurtures its up-and-coming acts. Kehlani and Too $hort are two homegrown talents that have made it to the big time. Maybe you'll see the next new talents during your trip!

There may not be huge arenas here, but Oakland can host some pretty large shows in its music venues. Nothing beats singing along to your favorite band with 1,000 other music fans.

You'll find some seriously atmospheric live jazz bars around Oakland. Think dim lighting, plenty of whisky and sultry jazz beats.
