Oakland Outdoor Activities

At first glance, Oakland may look like it's all skyscrapers and city living. But scratch beneath the surface and you'll find beautiful outdoor spaces where you can enjoy that Californian sunshine.

Whether you want to keep it local or go on a day trip adventure, there are loads of natural beauty spots in and around Oakland. The city has not one but two lakes, as well as a magnificent redwood forest and the waves of San Francisco Bay to explore.

Unsurprisingly, water sports are huge here. Stick to the sheltered waters of the Bay Area or head out west to the rolling surf of the Pacific Ocean.

You'll find plenty to keep you entertained on dry land too. Play a round of golf, explore the city's bike trails or relax with a picnic.

Rent some wheels and your options open up even further with the chance for some road trippin' around California.

Ready to lace up your joggers, whack on some sunscreen and head into the great outdoors?

Water Sports

  • The heart-shaped shores of Oakland's Lake Merritt can be found just outside downtown. Kayak, canoe, pedal boat, row or sail in this tidal lagoon. No swimming is allowed though.
  • Head into the Oakland Hills to relax by Lake Temescal. It's a pretty spot with great swimming areas and gorgeous views.
  • San Francisco Bay is a real water sports hub. Try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, windsurfing or even floating yoga.

Day Trips

  • To the north of San Fran, you'll find Point Reyes National Seashore. It's home to spectacular beaches, dramatic cliffs and fantastic coastal hiking trails.
  • It's a bit of a drive, but Yosemite National Park makes for an unforgettable trip. Get up early and go visit those ancient sequoias and jagged glacial peaks.
  • Mighty Lake Tahoe is a year-round highlight. In summer, enjoy its beaches. In winter, grab your skis or snowboard and ride some powder.

Other Outdoor Activities

  • Oakland's towering Redwood Regional Park is home to almost 2,000 acres of cool, atmospheric forest. You'll find plenty of peaceful hiking trails to explore.
