2. Port Elliot Bakery

Arguably one of the best bakeries in South Australia, not only is Port Elliot Bakery award-winning, it also has its own “Port Elliot Bakery appreciation society” on Facebook, and customers regular line up down the street. Their mouth-watering sausage rolls, with their buttery, flaky pastry perfection, make Port Elliot Bakery a must-visit for anyone passing through the Fleurieu area. 3. Denmark Bakery

One of WA’s most famous bakeries – and with good reason! Denmark Bakery is family-owned and run and proudly has its trophies lined up on the shelves right next to its freshly baked treats. Their glorious pies and rolls come in a variety of flavours, including the seafood basket, with some excellent vegetarian options as well.

4. Yatala Pies

Fuel your journey with an early stop at Brisbane’s iconic pastry destination, just a 30-minute drive from the CBD. Considered a local landmark, Yatala Pies has been feeding hungry road trippers and locals alike for over 130 years. While they’re named for their famous pies, the shop’s sausage rolls are also one for the books! A perfect blend of puff pastry and tasty meat filling, they’ll leave you feeling full and happy and ready to conquer the drive ahead.

5. Johnny Ripe

165 Shoreham Road, Red Hill, VIC

The owners of this incredible Mornington Peninsula bakery, Adam and Michelle, are on a self-confessed pursuit to make great pies and pastries and we are happy to reap the rewards of their efforts 😉 They’re most famous for their hand-baked apple pies and cronuts, but their sausage rolls are just as good. 6. Banjo’s Bakery Cafe

81/83 Gilbert Street, Latrobe, TAS

Banjo’s was founded in Tasmania in 1984 and has operated successfully ever since, growing to 41 stores across Australia. While there are a few locations to choose from, Banjo’s Latrobe store is said to be one of the best, renowned for its freshly baked bread, delicious cakes, slices, sausage rolls and pies. With vegetarian and vegan rolls available, there’s something for everyone.

7. La Petite Souris

Made fresh in-house, using meat from the local butcher, you can’t go past a sausage roll at this French patisserie on the Sunshine Coast. They’re the perfect balance of crumbly yet firm pastry with delicious meat filling that will blow your mind! And like most others on this list, a visit wouldn’t be complete without sampling one of the many sweet treats available too.

8. Bourke Street Bakery

633 Bourke St, Surry Hills, NSW

What started as a little corner store bakery in 2004 has grown to become a much-loved Sydney institution, with multiple outposts across the city and even a store in New York City. Bourke Street Bakery has gone on to win many awards, including being named the best place in Australia to grab a sausage roll in the Wotif Uniquely Aussie Awards in 2019. A stop at the original Bourke Street in Surry Hills makes for the perfect mid-morning snack before embarking on your road trip.
