Perched on the edge of Picton’s magnificent harbour is the stirring Picton War Memorial. Since 1925 the memorial has served as a powerful reminder of the loss associated with war. It’s location is fitting for the people of the Marlborough region to pay tribute to those who have fought in New Zealand’s wars. Originally built to commemorate the lives of 31 soldiers from Picton who lost their lives during World War I, the decades that followed saw the memorial altered to incorporate the names of the 12 soldiers who fell during World War II. Recent additions pay respect to those who served in Asia in the second half of the 20th century.
Visit the Picton War Memorial early in the morning to reflect quietly on the horrific loss of life endured in the wars of the 20th century. Read through the more than 40 names of the servicemen of Picton and the Sounds who lost their lives in World War I and II.
Admire the memorial’s stark white façade as it stands against the backdrop of the tranquil harbour. Capture images of the water through the arch of the memorial. Contemplate the stunning landscape and peaceful existence the fallen men of the region fought for. Look for the powerful inscription of “Peace, Perfect Peace” on the rear side of the memorial.
Attend the Anzac Day dawn service at the memorial if you are in Picton during April. The moving ceremony features a bugler playing The Last Post and a moment of silent reflection.
The Picton War Memorial is located on the edge of Picton Harbour and can be reached on foot from most accommodation within Picton. Find parking surrounding the harbour. The memorial is accessible every day and has no admission free.
