This is an old building, and thus, things are undoubtedly going to break down or not work properly from time to time. For most of the visit, our room had no heat; for the remainder of our visit, the room had heat, but, on more than one occasion, there was no hot water. It's worth noting, too, that the hotel elevator (as we found out), only goes to the basement, the main floor, and the top floor - so if one is staying on the second floor, one must use the stairs. The hotel is a bit of a walk from the town center, and getting to the hotel means walking up very steep hills. Parking is available in the hotel courtyard for £10/day; one has to register one's car at the front desk. The hotel room didn't include a refrigerator - I'm not sure if that's standard in the UK - but the hotel did provide free WiFi. Overall, the housekeeping staff did a great job of keeping the room - and overall hotel - clean and presentable, with daily room servicing. There was a bit of confusion regarding early check-in - one member of staff said the rooms weren't guaranteed to be available until 15:00, but they could check us in early if the room was ready, and another member of staff told us they didn't offer early check-in at all. Finding our room was also a bit of an adventure, but, luckily, one of the bartenders in the restaurant upstairs showed us how to get to our room via a separate staircase that we hadn't seen. It was an okay stay overall, with pros and cons to the stay.

No car parking for guests on arrival due to hosting a gin fest. Pool and hot tub closed. No hot water or heating untill after midnight due to gas problem. Hotest thing on the breakfast was the temperature of the room. All in all not a great stay.

Hotel is very tired and needs full upgrade, had to change rooms due to faults. Heating wasn’t working as on electric heaters and restaurant on reduced service due to problems in kitchen. However staff were very good and could not fault them.

Stayed for 1 night for business, so only used the room and no other amenities. Whilst the room was clean, it’s very tired and worn and had a musty smell to it. Appreciate it’s a historic building, but the room really needs an upgrade and general maintenance. Bedside lights didn’t work, remote controller for the tv didn’t work, shower was cold this morning and the bathroom had cracked paint/some mould in the shower. This was not a 4 star room and if I was staying for a personal trip, I would have been disappointed. Location for walking to town (down the hill) and free parking for guests is good.

This hotel is in a great location and has lovely staff. It needs some under the skin tlc, every thing on the surface is clean, but the underlying systems (heating, plumbing baths, windows, gym equipment) are in need of an update or servicing. I know thus will be expensive, but if not done soon it will really show.
